PETALING JAYA: Former Kuala Lumpur top cop Tan Sri Henry Chin Poy Wu (pic) died yesterday after suffering from a stroke.

Chin, 79, had flown in from Kota Kinabalu where he stayed with his family to attend a board meeting.

He was admitted to University Malaya Medical Centre on Friday.

Chin leaves behind wife Puan Sri Shirley Cheng Hua Chien, 72, and two children, Alex and Melissa.

Melissa, 31, said her father died in the hospital at about 6am after being in coma for two nights.

Chin served 38 years in the police force before retiring in 1993.

He joined the North Borneo police force as a probationary inspector on Aug 11, 1937.

Chin made history by being the first local to be promoted as Jesselton district police chief in 1960.

He was appointed an officer with the Cobbold Commission which was set up to relay the 20 points requested by Sabahans as the main criteria in joining Sarawak, Malaya and Singapore to form Malaysia in 1963.

Chin also held many posts including as Perak CID chief and Bukit Aman Special Branch deputy director before retiring as Kuala Lumpur police chief.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak extended his condolences to Chin’s family

“He was an instrumental member of the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) on illegal immigrants in Sabah,” he said on his Twitter account.

Former Bukit Aman CID director Tan Sri Mohd Zaman Khan described Chin as a “good man” and a “hard worker”.

MCA Public Services and Complaints Department chief Datuk Seri Michael Chong said Chin helped him a lot especially when he was threatened by pimps.

“He urged me to carry on with my job without fear or favour,” Chong said.

Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation senior vice-chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye described Chin’s passing as a “loss to the nation.”

“He was a police officer during the Communist insurgency. When I was the MP, he was the KL chief police officer.’’

Chin’s remains will be flown back to Kota Kinabalu today for final rites.
