Ani­fah in US for IS threat meet­ing

PUTRAJAYA: For­eign Min­is­ter Datuk Sri Ani­fah Aman (pic) will be in Wash­ing­ton DC to at­tend the Meet­ing of the For­eign Min­is­ters of the Global Coali­tion against Daesh to­mor­row.

He will be ac­com­pa­nied by of­fi­cials from his min­istry.

Hosted by US Sec­re­tary of State Rex Tiller­son, the meet­ing seeks to in­ten­sify the cam­paign to de­feat Daesh (IS) with the col­lab­o­ra­tion of the 68 part­ners of the Global Coali­tion.

It will also dis­cuss is­sues such as ad­dress­ing ur­gent hu­man­i­tar­ian needs, mines clear­ance and sta­bili- sa­tion as­sis­tance for newly lib­er­ated ar­eas in Iraq and Syria from the con­trol of IS.

The meet­ing is ex­pected to iden­tify the ideal mech­a­nism to counter IS’ con­stant at­tacks that had caused the loss of in­no­cent lives around the world and the spread of its ex­trem­ism and ide­ol­ogy.

Ani­fah is also ex­pected to speak at the meet­ing on threats posed by the IS from the na­tional and re­gional per­spec­tives.

He will also share Malaysia’s ex­pe­ri­ence and ideas on coun­ter­ing ter­ror­ism and thwart­ing ex­trem­ism.

Ani­fah will also take the op­por­tu­nity to meet Tiller­son for the first time to dis­cuss is­sues of com­mon in­ter­est, re­gional and global de­vel­op­ments.

It will be his first work­ing visit to the United States un­der the new ad­min­is­tra­tion of Pres­i­dent Don­ald Trump.
