Peng Soon-Yee See prove their worth after fruitful outing in Russia

PETALING JAYA: Shuttlers Chan Peng SoonCheah Yee See have shown they can be counted upon to challenge for honours at next month’s Kuala Lumpur SEA Games.

In only their third tournament together, world No. 152 Peng Soon-Yee See put up an impressive showing to clinch the fifth-tier Russian Open in Vladivosto­k on Sunday.

National mixed doubles head coach Chin Eei Hui believes that Peng Soon-Yee See are capable of pulling off some upsets at the Aug 19-30 Games.

“I’m happy with their progress, especially Yee See. She has improved with each tournament,” said Eei Hui.

“I’m also pleased that Peng Soon has taken on the responsibi­lity to help Yee See to focus on their game plan.

“The win in Russia will surely fire them up and boost their confidence ahead of the Games.

“I hope they keep their current form going and create some upsets against the higher-ranked pairs from Indonesia and Thailand to make the final,” added Eei Hui.

In their final run-up to the Games, Peng Soon-Yee See will compete in the New Zealand Open in Auckland from Aug 1-5.

They have a tough challenge as they are drawn to meet Indonesia’s world No. 29 Hafiz Faizal-Shela Devi Aulia in the first round.

The other Malaysians in the fray are Lee Zii Jia, Tan Jia Wei, Chong Wei Feng, Liew Daren, Goh Giap Chin, Soh Wooi Yik (men’s singles), Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi, Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzudin Rumsani, Wei Feng-Lim Khim Wah, Wooi YikChen Tang Jie, Nur Mohd Azriyn Ayub-Ooi Zi Heng (men’s doubles), Goh Jin Wei, Ho Yen Mei, Lee Ying Ying (women’s singles) and Vivian Hoo-Woon Khe Wei and Joyce ChoongGoh Yea Ching (women’s doubles).
