KUALA LUMPUR: National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (Niosh) chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye has urged the Cabinet to discuss and introduce specific measures to ensure the safety of residential premises.

“The authorities should amend the existing law as there is currently no provision that compels the installation of grilles to follow the specifications set by the Fire and Rescue Department,” he said in a statement.

He said Niosh was willing to assist in developing training modules for the administration of schools, including tahfiz.

Lauding the Government’s decision to set up a special task force, he said: “However, I hope the results of the investigation and proposals submitted by the special taskforce can be implemented.”

“This is important because we do not want the special task force’s findings to receive the same fate as the recommendations made by the Royal Commission of Inquiry on Religious School Safety after previous fire tragedies.”
