Only the healthy should qualify

-

IT’S just the third month after the 14th General Election and already we have seen three elected representatives succumbing to ill health.

The first one, Sungai Kandis assemblyman Mat Shuhaimi Shafiei, 50, passed away last week due to lymphoma cancer.

The second, Penang Deputy Chief Minister 1 Datuk Ahmad Zakiyuddin Abdul Rahman, 60, complained of chest pains on Friday and has undergone heart bypass surgery.

The latest is Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Mohamed Hanipa Maidin, 49, who collapsed while our prime minister was giving a speech to civil servants at their monthly assembly in Putrajaya.

These three incidents call for urgency on the part of the government and the Election Commission to make it compulsory for all future election candidates to submit a medical checkup with their nomination forms.
