PETALING JAYA: The controversial Visit Malaysia 2020 logo, criticised by many as “amateurish”, will be redone.

The Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry is planning a contest to find its replacement.

“It will be an open contest this time. The idea is to get a proper design with Malaysians joining in to give their perspective,” its minister Datuk Mohamaddin Ketapi said when contacted yesterday.

Mohamaddin said a discussion at the ministerial level will soon be held to decide on the details.

The Visit Malaysia 2020 logo was launched in Chiang Mai, Thailand, by former Tourism and Culture minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Aziz in conjunction with the Asean Tourism Forum earlier this year.

The logo, modelled after a postage stamp, features the Petronas Twin Towers, and an orang utan hugging a proboscis monkey and turtle on a beach donning sunglasses.

It bears the tagline: Travel. Enjoy. Respect.

The much-derided logo was

described as poorly designed and unprofessional by many.

Nazri had defended the design, saying that the concept and creation was done by experienced in-house staff.

This did not stop Malaysians from coming up with their alternative take on the logo online.

Mohamaddin said it had not been fully decided whether the competition would call for the logo to be completely redesigned or for it to be “touched up”.

“Maybe we will use the existing logo but ask for it to be modified. Or there could be a new design,” he added.

The minister said there was ample time to work on the logo.
