SBegin­ning Oct 1, the Im­mi­gra­tion Depart­ment will freeze the as­sets and bank ac­counts of em­ploy­ers caught hir­ing or har­bour­ing il­le­gal work­ers. Its direc­tor-gen­eral Datuk Seri Musta­far Ali warned yes­ter­day that there are pro­vi­sions un­der Section 56(1) of the Im­mi­gra­tion Act which em­pow­ers the depart­ment to do so.

“This is not a new thing. But due to the lack of aware­ness, these laws were not fully en­forced,” Musta­far told a press con­fer­ence here.

“Do not get shocked when we en­force the law from Oct 1 as the pro­vi­sions are al­ready in place.”

He said em­ploy­ers have un­til the end of this month to sort out their work­ers’ travel doc­u­ments, visas and per­mits.
