Local doc aims to be world’s funniest
PETALING JAYA: Medical doctor-turnedstand-up comedian Dr Jason Leong is among two Malaysian representatives at the Funniest Person In The World Contest 2016, the world’s largest stand-up comedy competition organised by the Laugh Factory.
Leong and his compatriot, popular comedian Harith Iskander will compete with 87 other comedians from 56 countries to win the grand prize of US$100,000 (RM400,000) and a US stand-up comedy tour.
Laugh Factory was launched in Hollywood in 1979 and since then has established itself as a global comedy brand. It is the leader for worldwide comedy tours, TV shows and movies. The Laugh Factory channel has over 210 million viewers.
Laugh Factory serves as the birthplace of many comedy stars like Eddie Murphy, Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle and Jerry Seinfeld.
Voting of Round One began on Sept 1 and will end on Oct 1. The 20 comedians with the highest votes will proceed to the semi-finals in Helsinki, Finland, on Dec 4 and 5.
Harith is confident that he will make it far in the competition. “My 26 years in comedy gives me a strong chance to be a winner. I call on my fans to vote me to represent our country in the finals, and show the world that we have world class stand-up comedians.”
