Dream big, then take action

The Sun (Malaysia) - - SUNBIZ -

thought I didn’t have enough experience because my background was in accountancy and my job had always been in accounting. It’s challenging but you just need to be yourself.

What advice can you offer to entrepreneurs/youths who want to start their career/own business? We need to dream big. I made a mistake of not dreaming big before. I never dreamt I would become a CEO one day. I just wanted to become the CFO, and I achieved that at the age of 45. If you don’t dream big, it will not take you anywhere.

For those who want to be a takaful agent, especially, they need to dream big. Dreaming big is the first step for one to take action.

How do you maintain work/life balance? I work even on Saturdays and Sundays, but I participate in marathons (half marathons), in and outside Malaysia. If you register for any marathon, you need to exercise and train, otherwise you will suffer during race day. So I try to exercise at least three times a week. Running can relieve stress. When you run, you don’t depend on any person.

How has mentorship made a difference in your professional and personal lives? A former boss changed me a lot. He made me look at life differently.

What do you want to accomplish in the next five years? I want to bring GETB to the top three position (among takaful companies in Malaysia). Not only targeting business, I also want to make sure as many Muslims as possible have takaful coverage, because there is a clear lack of coverage among the Malays.

Blue or Red Ocean Strategy? Or neither? I believe in the Blue Ocean Strategy. You need to be creative when growing a business. You cannot do the same things over and over again. If you want to capture market share and bring the business to a high level, you need to do things differently.

A must-read for every business owner/ manager is ...? 60-Minute CEO. I didn’t have a dream to become a CEO. I was an “accidental leader”, but that doesn’t mean one cannot be successful. You can change from an accidental leader to become a missionpossible leader.
