OLYMPICS X-RAY MA­CHINES TO BE REUSED IN BRAZIL’S JAILS

RIO DE JANEIRO: X-ray ma­chines and me­tal de­tec­tors used in the Rio Olympic Games are set to be re­cy­cled in jails across Brazil, the jus­tice min­istry said. It said scan­ners with a to­tal value of 44.6 mil­lion reais (RM56 mil­lion) were due to be moved to jails in the com­ing weeks. Sao Paulo alone was set to re­ceive 66 x-ray ma­chines and 170 me­tal de­tec­tors. Brazil’s jails are no­to­ri­ous for high lev­els of crime and drugs. A 2015 Hu­man Rights Watch re­port on Per­nam­buco state found that con­trol in some jails has been ef­fec­tively handed over to se­lect in­mates. – dpa
