> Ben Willis talks about the role of a manager for aspiring musicians who want a head start in their career
LOOKING to take your band out of your bedroom and onto the world stage? Guinness Amplify has you covered with the Amplify Academy – a day-long celebration of Malaysian-made music – taking place on Oct 1 at various venues in Publika, Kuala Lumpur.
The event will feature speakers from the international music industry, including producers, record label execs, festival bookers and more, to share the benefits of their experience with aspiring local musicians.
One of the speakers at the Amplify Academy is none other than Ben Willis ( below), manager of one of the most recognisable names from the Malaysian music scene today – Yuna.
We caught up with him in advance of his appearance, to give you a taste of what you can expect at the
event. VENUE: THE BEE, PUBLIKA

VENUE: D’BALCONY, PUBLIKA for a manager? “I think this is a personal presence. Most artistes want help from the beginning but some may want to allow their career to grow until they feel like they need help.”
How can a manager help? “A manager can play a bunch of roles. But it’s up to the artiste really. The way we approach management is by looking at the artistes’ business and then seeing where we can fit in to help them grow in all the facets of their business.” What should an artiste look for in a manager? “Honesty and transparency. If we are going to work together, then you have to trust me.”
What do you look for in an artiste? “Again, honesty and transparency. If we are going to work together, then I will have to trust you. I need to know you are down to work when everyone else isn’t and that you have the drive to be successful. Everyone says they do but mostly they don’t.”
Any tips for Malaysian acts who want to break into the international scene? “Make great music. We will find it if you make it. We found Yuna.”
