TENS OF THOU­SANDS CRIP­PLED BY FLOOD­ING IN THAI­LAND

BANGKOK: The sea­sonal mon­soon has caused flood­ing in many parts of Thai­land, af­fect­ing over 20,000 house­holds, with some of the coun­try’s top tourist des­ti­na­tions sub­merged in wa­ter, the ir­ri­ga­tion depart­ment said yes­ter­day. Among the hard­est hit are pop­u­lar tourist des­ti­na­tions like the an­cient cities of Ayut­thaya, 80km north of Bangkok and Sukhothai, 422km north of Bangkok. In Ayut­thaya alone, more than 14,000 house­holds are in­un­dated. The ir­ri­ga­tion depart­ment said 6,720sq km have been dam­aged In Sukhothai. – dpa
