Umno plans to ‘bor­row’ MCA seat

JOHOR BARU: Pu­lai Umno divi­sion chief Datuk Nur Ja­zlan Mo­hamad has pro­posed “bor­row­ing” the Pengkalan Rint­ing state seat from MCA in the next gen­eral elec­tion.

“Our sur­vey has shown that lo­cal Chi­nese vot­ers are not ready to (ac­cept an) MCA can­di­date. Pu­lai Umno wants to ‘bor­row’ the Pengkalan Rint­ing seat from MCA. I am con­fi­dent Umno can win the seat in the next elec­tion,” he told a press con­fer­ence here. He said the lo­cal Chi­nese have is­sues with an MCA can­di­date but not one from Umno.

“We bor­row the seat for this term and will re­turn it to MCA af­ter the po­lit­i­cal sit­u­a­tion is more sta­ble.” He said af­ter the re­de­lin­eation, Pengkalan Rint­ing will have its name changed to Per­ling and the com­po­si­tion of vot­ers will be Malays at 25,633 (45.73%), Chi­nese at 23,555 (42.02%), In­di­ans at 6,221 (11.1%) and other races at 647 (1.15%).

Cur­rently, the Pengkalan Rint­ing assem­bly­man is Cheo Yee How of DAP.
