Min­istry work­ing to free doc­tor held in Is­rael

PE­TAL­ING JAYA: The For­eign Min­istry is mon­i­tor­ing de­vel­op­ments on the de­ten­tion of Malaysian doc­tor, Fauziah Hasan, in Is­rael.

Fauziah, a con­sul­tant at the Am­pang Pu­teri Spe­cial­ist Hospi­tal in Kuala Lumpur, was among 13 mem­bers on the Women’s Boat to Gaza (WBG) mis­sion on board the Zay­touna–Oliva, which was de­tained by the Is­raeli navy on Wed­nes­day.

The min­istry said in a state­ment yes­ter­day it was in com­mu­ni­ca­tion with sev­eral par­ties to en­sure Fauziah’s safety and well-be­ing, and was work­ing towards her re­lease.

Fauziah has been in­volved in vol­un­tary ac­tiv­i­ties through Rose2Rose, an agency un­der MyCare, pro­vid­ing hu­man­i­tar­ian aid to vic­tims of war and dis­as­ters.

MyCare chair­man As­soc Prof Hafidzi Mohd Noor said the 13 ac­tivists and crew are safe. He said he re­ceived in­for­ma­tion on the sta­tus of those on board the boat from the Free­dom Flotilla Coali­tion, a global sol­i­dar­ity move­ment op­posed to the siege of Gaza.

Hafidzi said the boat, which was in the fi­nal phase of its voy­age from Barcelona, was in­ter­cepted by the Is­raeli navy off the Gaza coast and is cur­rently be­ing held at Ash­dod Port. – by Ra­jvin­der Singh
