Ministry working to free doctor held in Israel
PETALING JAYA: The Foreign Ministry is monitoring developments on the detention of Malaysian doctor, Fauziah Hasan, in Israel.
Fauziah, a consultant at the Ampang Puteri Specialist Hospital in Kuala Lumpur, was among 13 members on the Women’s Boat to Gaza (WBG) mission on board the Zaytouna–Oliva, which was detained by the Israeli navy on Wednesday.
The ministry said in a statement yesterday it was in communication with several parties to ensure Fauziah’s safety and well-being, and was working towards her release.
Fauziah has been involved in voluntary activities through Rose2Rose, an agency under MyCare, providing humanitarian aid to victims of war and disasters.
MyCare chairman Assoc Prof Hafidzi Mohd Noor said the 13 activists and crew are safe. He said he received information on the status of those on board the boat from the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, a global solidarity movement opposed to the siege of Gaza.
Hafidzi said the boat, which was in the final phase of its voyage from Barcelona, was intercepted by the Israeli navy off the Gaza coast and is currently being held at Ashdod Port. – by Rajvinder Singh
