GERMANY coach Joachim Low yesterday reacted sceptically to a suggestion from FIFA president Gianni Infantino to expand the World Cup from 32 to 48 teams from 2026 onwards. “The best teams should be at the World Cup and the European championships. If you continue raising (numbers) there is a wateringdown of the quality,” Low said as the German team gathered in Hamburg for two World Cup qualifiers. Low, who coached Germany to the 2014 world title, named the current 32-team format “great and ideal” but also said he was not familiar with concrete plans in connection with the increase. The FIFA Council meets October 13 and 14 in Zurich to discuss the bidding process for the 2026 tournament as well as new World Cup formats.
