‘Tonto’ in Customs officer’s car crash case identified

The Sun (Malaysia) - - NEWS WITHOUT BORDERS -

KOTA BARU: Police have identified a local man in his 30s who is believed to be a ‘tonto’ (thugs working for smugglers) involved in a car crash that led to the death of a female Customs officer.

“Police are also tracking down his colleagues,” said Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Noor Rashid Ibrahim yesterday.

Noor Rashid added Kelantan police are setting up a special team to address the problem of tonto at the Malaysia-Thai border in Kelantan. He said this follows the death of Customs officer Anisah Ali, who succumbed to her injuries after the car in which she was travelling with two other officers was rammed by the suspected tonto in an incident at Banggol Chicha, Pasir Mas, last Friday.

Noor Rashid said Kelantan police would also seek assistance from Thai police in investigating the case.

Meanwhile, Customs director-general Datuk Seri Khazali Ahmad has denied claims that a “mole” within the department had tipped-off the tonto during the operation in Pasir Mas.

He said threats by tonto were not new to the department, but previous encounters had never resulted in casualties.

“Officers on duty know the risks and the threats posed by tonto, but it is difficult to predict when they will strike,” he said. – Bernama
