25 DEAD IN MYAN­MAR FERRY DIS­AS­TER

YANGON: Res­cuers have re­cov­ered 25 bod­ies and ex­pect to find scores more af­ter a ferry packed with teach­ers, stu­dents and work­ers cap­sized in cen­tral Myan­mar, author­i­ties said yes­ter­day. A to­tal of 154 peo­ple have been res­cued since the boat sank early Sat­ur­day about 72km north of the city of Monywa. Res­cue per­son­nel scour­ing the Chind­win River have lo­cated the sunken ves­sel but they fear the death toll could reach as high as 100. The boat was es­ti­mated to have been car­ry­ing 240-250 peo­ple, around 100 more than its ca­pac­ity, an of­fi­cial said. – AFP
