Im­pact­ing lives through ed­u­ca­tional grants

THE Disted 2016 Schol­ar­ship and Bur­sary Awards Fund granted a to­tal of 300 stu­dents with over RM950,000 worth of ed­u­ca­tional and fi­nan­cial aid at a cer­e­mony re­cently. Of­fi­ci­at­ing the aus­pi­cious event was Disted Col­lege pres­i­dent and CEO Dr Seah Soo Aun. Also present was Tan Sri Chin Fook Weng, rep­re­sent­ing the board of di­rec­tors, along with other prom­i­nent in­di­vid­u­als.

For eight years, the Disted Schol­ar­ship and Bur­sary Award Fund has part­nered with Wawasan Ed­u­ca­tion Foun­da­tion and Yeap Chor Ee Char­i­ta­ble Trust to prof­fer ed­u­ca­tional and fi­nan­cial grants to­talling over RM8 mil­lion. These plus fi­nan­cial sup­port have helped over 2,000 de­serv­ing stu­dents, im­prov­ing their lives in var­i­ous ways.

PRO­VID­ING OP­POR­TU­NI­TIES Among the Disted Bur­sary Award re­cip­i­ents is Ding Teck Song, vi­su­al­ly­im­paired due to an ac­ci­dent. Hav­ing ap­plied for many schol­ar­ships be­fore, yet un­suc­cess­ful, the bur­sary from Disted now sees a grate­ful Ding pur­su­ing a Diploma in Busi­ness In­for­ma­tion Tech­nol­ogy pro­gramme.

For­mer South Aus­tralia Cer­tifi­cate of Ed­u­ca­tion (SACE) In­ter­na­tional stu­dent Goo Lyann at­tended an awards pre­sen­ta­tion cer­e­mony re­cently to re­ceive the “Best Per­for­mance Prize” and “Best Sub­ject Per­for­mance Prize”. Goo scored ex­cep­tion­ally well in five sub­jects – English as a sec­ond lan­guage, psy­chol­ogy, eco­nom­ics, ac­count­ing and Malay stud­ies.

“This schol­ar­ship and award marks a mile­stone in my aca­demic life. They have helped me with my con­fi­dence in fur­ther­ing my stud­ies while also re­sem­bling to­kens of recog­ni­tion from Disted,” said Goo, cur­rently pur­su­ing a psy­chol­ogy de­gree at a lo­cal univer­sity. AWARDS AND GRANTS Disted Col­lege pro­vides ed­u­ca­tional as­sis­tance through five main grants, namely: the Wawasan Ed­u­ca­tion Foun­da­tion Award and the Yeap Chor Ee Char­i­ta­ble Trust Award; the Disted Merit Award; the Disted De­gree Award; the Disted Pres­i­dent’s Scholar Award; and the Disted Sport Ex­cel­lence Award.

Award ap­pli­cants need to meet a num­ber of re­quire­ments, terms and con­di­tions. Cri­te­ria that will be looked into in­clude aca­demic achievements, so­cioe­co­nomic back­ground and ex­tracur­ric­u­lar ac­tiv­i­ties among oth­ers ar­eas.
