US DIPLO­MAT: DUTERTE CAUS­ING ‘CON­STER­NA­TION’

MANILA: Philip­pine Pres­i­dent Ro­drigo Duterte’s con­tro­ver­sial state­ments and the lack of clar­ity about his in­ten­tions had cre­ated “con­ster­na­tion” in the US, a se­nior Amer­i­can diplo­mat said yes­ter­day. US as­sis­tant sec­re­tary of state for East Asian and Pa­cific af­fairs Daniel Rus­sel met with Philip­pine for­eign sec­re­tary Per­fecto Yasay in Manila to dis­cuss re­cent re­marks by Duterte as well as the spate of killings un­der his ag­gres­sive anti-drug war. Rus­sel also said that im­prov­ing re­la­tions be­tween the Philip­pines and China should not come at the ex­pense of the US. – dpa
