Septem­ber PPI up 0.4% on an­nual ba­sis

PE­TAL­ING JAYA: The Pro­ducer Price In­dex (PPI) for lo­cal pro­duc­tion saw its first pos­i­tive growth on a year-on year ba­sis, up 0.4% in Septem­ber 2016, af­ter de­clin­ing for the prior 24 months, ac­cord­ing to the Sta­tis­tics Depart­ment.

The high­est in­crease was recorded by agri­cul­ture, forestry & fish­ing (+28.3%) fol­lowed by wa­ter sup­ply (+2.4%) and elec­tric­ity & gas (+1.4%). In con­trast, the in­dex for min­ing and man­u­fac­tur­ing de­creased by 11.3% and 1.1% re­spec­tively.

The PPI for lo­cal pro­duc­tion in­clined by 1.8% in Septem­ber 2016 com­pared to Au­gust 2016. This was due to in­creases in three sec­tors, namely, Agri­cul­ture, Forestry & fish­ing (+5.1%), man­u­fac­tur­ing (+1.7%) and wa­ter sup­ply (+0.4%). How­ever, the min­ing in­dex de­clined by (-1.1%), while, elec­tric­ity & gas in­dex re­mained un­changed.

Com­pared with the same month a year ago, the PPI for lo­cal pro­duc­tion by stage of pro­cess­ing (SOP) for Septem­ber 2016 in­creased by 0.4%. This was due to in­creases crude ma­te­ri­als for fur­ther pro­cess­ing (+10.0%) and fin­ished goods (+0.1%). How­ever, in­dex for in­ter­me­di­ate ma­te­ri­als, Sup­plies and Com­po­nents fell by 2.6%.

The PPI for lo­cal pro­duc­tion by SOP in­clined by 1.85% in Septem­ber 2016 from Au­gust.
