THE glob­al­i­sa­tion era saw some changes to the struc­ture of the Asean eco­nomic mar­ket par­tic­u­larly in the phar­ma­ceu­ti­cal in­dus­try.

In view of this, Man­age­ment & Science Univer­sity (MSU) re­cently or­gan­ised the Asia Pa­cific Phar­macy Ed­u­ca­tion Work­shop 2016 (Appew 2016) to study the ef­fects of the ed­u­ca­tion sec­tor and phar­ma­ceu­ti­cal in­dus­try when the ASEAN Free Trade Area (Afta) is fully im­ple­mented.

With the theme,

the 6th edi­tion of the pro­gramme, which was hosted for the sec­ond time by MSU, was held last month.

The Appew 2016 also re­ceived sup­port from Jo­sai Univer­sity (Ja­pan), In­sti­tut Te­knologi Ban­dung (In­done­sia), Chu­la­longkorn Univer­sity and Bu­rapha Univer­sity (Thai­land) and the Univer­sity of the Im­mac­u­late Con­cep­tion (Philip­pines).

It aims to gather academia, sci­en­tists, phar­macy stu­dents, pro­fes­sional phar­ma­cists and the gen­eral pub­lic to ex­change and share their ex­pe­ri­ences and re­search re­sults about all as­pects of phar­macy and phar­ma­ceu­ti­cal sciences, and to dis­cuss the prac­ti­cal chal­lenges en­coun­tered and the so­lu­tions adopted. It also aims to build a net­work­ing plat­form for med­i­cal spe­cial­ists, clin­i­cal spe­cial­ists, med­i­cal pro­fes­sors, and aca­demics.

The top­ics for the ple­nary lec­ture pre­sented dur­ing the work­shop were Op­por­tu­ni­ties and Chal­lenges of the Phar­macy Pro­fes­sion in Afta Era, Phar­macy Ed­u­ca­tion in Malaysia, Phar­macy Ed­u­ca­tion in In­done­sia in Afta, Phar­macy Ed­u­ca­tion in Afta Era – Ja­pan’s Point of View and Phar­macy Ed­u­ca­tion in Afta Era – Thai­land Per­spec­tive.

The re­cip­i­ent of the Shukri Dis­tin­guished Key­note Lec­ture Award was awarded to As­so­ciate Prof Dr Sind­hchai Keokitichai from Bu­rapha Univer­sity for his con­tri­bu­tion in pro­mot­ing phar­ma­ceu­ti­cal ed­u­ca­tion in Thai­land.

A to­tal of 400 par­tic­i­pants from 11 coun­tries such as Malaysia, Ja­pan, the Philip­pines, China, Thai­land, Myan­mar and Pales­tine par­tic­i­pated in the work­shop.

The Appew 2016 was of­fi­ci­ated by Health Min­istry Na­tional Phar­ma­ceu­ti­cal Reg­u­la­tory Agen­cies di­rec­tor Dr Salmah Bahri. Also present were MSU pres­i­dent Prof Tan Sri Dr Mohd Shukri Ab Ya­jid and in­ter­na­tional and lo­cal del­e­gates.
