SHAH ALAM: The De­wan Ne­gara hopes to in­tro­duce a mech­a­nism by which min­is­ters can be sum­moned to the House to ad­dress is­sues of na­tional im­por­tance. De­wan Ne­gara pres­i­dent Datuk Seri S.A. Vigneswaran told theSun many se­na­tors want the Up­per House to be granted more au­thor­ity to get min­is­ters to re­spond to ur­gent mat­ters.

He said many se­na­tors had voiced their dis­ap­point­ment over the fact that the De­wan Ne­gara does not get much at­ten­tion from min­is­ters, who usu­ally just send their deputies to re­spond to the Up­per House.

“We are mulling a mech­a­nism to al­low the De­wan Ne­gara to call up min­is­ters to an­swer sen­si­tive is­sues or mat­ters of pub­lic in­ter­est.

“It is still in the plan­ning and dis­cus­sion stage. We have to look into this mat­ter based on the re­quire­ments of the De­wan Ne­gara,” he said dur­ing a Deep­avali open house here.

Cur­rently, the De­wan Ne­gara has to pass a mo­tion to get min­is­ters to present them­selves.
