SHAH ALAM: The Dewan Negara hopes to introduce a mechanism by which ministers can be summoned to the House to address issues of national importance. Dewan Negara president Datuk Seri S.A. Vigneswaran told theSun many senators want the Upper House to be granted more authority to get ministers to respond to urgent matters.
He said many senators had voiced their disappointment over the fact that the Dewan Negara does not get much attention from ministers, who usually just send their deputies to respond to the Upper House.
“We are mulling a mechanism to allow the Dewan Negara to call up ministers to answer sensitive issues or matters of public interest.
“It is still in the planning and discussion stage. We have to look into this matter based on the requirements of the Dewan Negara,” he said during a Deepavali open house here.
Currently, the Dewan Negara has to pass a motion to get ministers to present themselves.
