The Sun (Malaysia) - - NEWS WITHOUT BORDERS - BY KONG SEE HOH

PLANTATION Industries and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Mah Siew Keong said Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri Richard Riot will visit Bangladesh this week to find out why 8,000 Bangladesh workers who have been given Malaysian work permits have yet to come to Malaysia.

According to a report in Sin Chew Daily yesterday, he said the government granted approvals four to five months ago for furniture manufacturers to bring in the workers.

But after having paid the necessary levies, the workers have been postponing their trip here, he said, adding that many in the furniture industry have been forced to stop operations and turn down new orders.

“The Cabinet had directed the Human Resources minister to visit Bangladesh to find out the situation there. I believe it is due to some technical issues,” Mah said when he officiated at the opening of the United Malaysian Contractors Association new building in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday.
