‘DEMONSTRATIONS GAVE US MERDEKA’
PETALING JAYA: Bersih chairman Maria Chin Abdullah has said it was through demonstrations that the country gained independence. “If you remember how we won our independence, we were on the streets. It is part of our right to dissent,” she said. “We wanted to show them (the British) we wanted change, and now to show to the government that people are serious about it.” Petty Traders Association president Datuk Ang Say Tee said he lodged a police report at the Dang Wangi station as a precaution and to ask police to beef up security during the gatherings. Ang added that the traders were unhappy as weekends are usually their busy days.
