MALAYSIA HAS granted refugee status to close to 900,000 people from different countries since 2010. Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim said more than 90% of those who were granted refugee status are from Myanmar with more than 800,000 applications approved. This was in stark contrast to Sri Lanka, which had the second highest number of refugees in Malaysia after Myanmar, with only 26,615 individuals granted with refugee status. He said the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees is responsible for approving the applications of refugees.
