FBM KLCI up slightly, thanks to late buy­ing

BURSA Malaysia’s main in­dex fin­ished slightly higher yes­ter­day on last-minute buy­ing sup­port in key heavy­weights, led by Sime Darby.

The multi­na­tional con­glom­er­ate, which con­trib­uted 1.24 points to the FBM KLCI, rose 11 sen to RM8.06 with 4.93 mil­lion shares chang­ing hands.

The mar­ket barom­e­ter was in neg­a­tive ter­ri­tory for most of the trad­ing ses­sion but picked up mo­men­tum late in the day to close just 1.06 points bet­ter at 1,630.38.

On the broader mar­ket, de­clin­ers led ad­vancers 547 to 238, while 321 coun­ters were un­changed, 617 un­traded and 26 sus­pended.

Among the heavy­weights coun­ters, IOI Corp rose 4 sen to RM4.40, Hong Leong Bank climbed 8 sen to RM13.20, RHB edged up 5 sen to RM4.75, Petronas Da­gan­gan went up 12 sen to RM23.58 and Gent­ing Malaysia im­proved 2 sen to RM4.72.

The gain­ers list was led by Malaysia Smelt­ing Corp, which was up 34 sen to RM4.29; Huat Lai, 20 sen to RM5.04; Perusa­haan Sadur Timah, 16 sen to RM6.91; MAHB, 13 sen to RM6.33, and Amway, 12 sen to RM7.64.

A dealer said the emer­gence of bar­gain hunters nib­bling on cheaper qual­ity stocks lifted the key in­dex to set­tle near the day’s high of 1,631.67. – Ber­nama
