> Liverpool could struggle without Coutinho <

The Sun (Malaysia) - - SPORTS -

LIVERPOOL’S lack of squad depth could come back to haunt them in their Premier League title push. That is the belief of Reds legend Phil Thompson.

Jurgen Klopp’s team have enjoyed an impressive campaign so far and sit second in the table, a point behind Chelsea.

Having lost just one top-flight match heading in to December, Liverpool hold a real chance at claiming their longawaited first Premier League trophy.

However, Philippe Coutinho’s ankle ligament injury suffered this weekend, which sees him sidelined for the next six weeks, has come as a huge blow to the side.

Klopp is also set to lose Sadio Mane to the Africa Cup of Nations in January, while Danny Ings is out for the season, and Thompson admits their depth in quality is an

issue.

“We are about to find out whether Coutinho’s injury is a bump in the road or a major disruption,” Thompson told the Mirror.

“If Liverpool are still top, or running neck-and-neck with their rivals, by the time Coutinho is back, they are going to be right there.

“Coutinho, Adam Lallana and Roberto Firmino have all been fantastic this season, and it’s going to be interesting to see how Liverpool cope. If Coutinho is going to be out for a few games, they will miss his energy as much as his quality.

“To be honest, I don’t think the squad runs deeper than 13 or 14 players in terms of top-level class, so if they lose any more of those three lads who have been running the show, Jurgen’s resources are going to be stretched.”

Liverpool could dip in to the transfer market in January to help boost their chances of title glory with Borussia Dortmund’s young attacker Christian Pulisic being linked with a £25m switch – Express
