Vietnam’s Little Mermaid scores big with 7 golds
PETALING JAYA: Vietnam’s Little Mermaid, Nguyen Thi Anh Vien, overshadowed Singapore’s Olympic champion Joseph Schooling by sweeping seven golds in swimming. Schooling won six after scaling down his number of events from 10 in 2015.
Nguyen dominated her events at the National Aquatic Centre in Bukit Jalil, winning seven gold medals and three silvers, and breaking two Games records and a further three Vietnamese national records.
The 20-year-old captain in the Vietnamese army won the women’s 200m individual medley by nearly 5sec, and added the 50m backstroke gold to her collection last Friday.
