Crew­man miss­ing in oil drilling ves­sel fire

MIRI: An off­shore oil and gas drilling ves­sel, Ocean Geos, caught fire near Baram in the South China Sea yes­ter­day.

Of the 39 crew­men on board one is miss­ing af­ter the fire broke out.

It is learnt that in the 3am in­ci­dent an ex­plo­sion oc­curred in the ship’s en­gine room that led to the fire.

A search and res­cue oper­a­tion is un­der way to find the miss­ing Malaysian crew­man, said Malaysian Mar­itime En­force­ment Agency Miri chief Mohd Fauzi Oth­man.

Ocean Geos is owned by a Kuala Lumpur-based com­pany, which is a sub­con­trac­tor of Petronas. There were 39 work­ers on board com­pris­ing 33 Malaysians, five In­done­sians and a Thai na­tional. They jumped off the ship dur­ing the fire.

The ship was five nau­ti­cal miles (9.3km) from Miri.
