#AtTheEdge takes it to the street

Some 400 peo­ple – a coali­tion of jour­nal­ists and mem­bers of the media, as well as ac­tivists, lawyers, politi­cians and the public – showed up on Satur­day, Au­gust 8 at Cen­tral Mar­ket to sup­port the #AtTheEdge rally, also known as the #808. The peo­ple, who be­gan their march to­wards the Bar Coun­cil head­quar­ters at 11am, protested the three-month sus­pen­sion of The Edge Weekly and The Edge Fi­nan­cial Daily. been blocked within the coun­try. Malaysian po­lice has ob­tained a war­rant of ar­rest for its UK-based editor Clare Rew­cas­tle Brown, who has been ac­cused of con­spir­ing to top­ple Na­jib Razak.

Par­tic­i­pants of the rally wore black and blue to ‘sym­bol­ise the bashed up con­di­tion of press free­dom in Malaysia’, the bruis­ing of media through the clam­p­down, and re­stric­tions on press free­dom and peo­ple’s right to in­for­ma­tion.
