What makes a fam­ily? The an­swer to that ques­tion is more com­pli­cated than you think, as founder and project di­rec­tor Steven Lee dis­cov­ered when he chose ‘Defin­ing Fam­ily’ as the theme for the ninth Kuala Lumpur In­ter­na­tional Photo Awards. ‘Same­sex mar­riages, LGBT and sin­gle-par­ent fam­i­lies... are chal­leng­ing the tra­di­tional def­i­ni­tions of the fam­ily, and I thought that the theme would throw up in­ter­est­ing im­agery from around the world,’ he said.

‘Col­ors in the rain’ by Malaysian Af­fendi Alias is one of the many en­tries re­ceived from around the world, and is a con­tender for the Best South-East Asian En­try prize. Keep an eye on its web­site in mid-July for the win­ners an­nounce­ment, with the awards cer­e­mony and ex­hi­bi­tion tak­ing place from Septem­ber 9 to 19 at White Box in Pub­lika.
