Kelantan & Terengganu
A deeply religious state, Kelantan isn't really the place to go looking for nightlife. If you fancy a nightcap, try local Chinese restaurants which often have a selection of beer and wine for non-Muslims. In Terengganu, Perhentian Kecil is a favourite amongst backpackers for its chilled-out beach bars.
NEW The Vinum Xchange 221 Jalan Bandar, Kuala Terengganu (09 638 1353/www.facebook.com/ thevinumXchange). A mix of coffee and cocktails, the Vinum Xchange is your mat-sallehfriendly hangout with exposed light bulbs, tall wooden stools and a small selection of pastries. The crowd consists of young locals and welldressed backpackers looking for a pint. The wall of wines will appeal to thirsty tourists in conservative Terengganu but this oasis in the desert also boasts a good selection of spirits. Child friendly. Credit cards accepted. Wed-Mon, 11am–11pm. Closed Tuesdays. $$
Pulau Perhentian Kecil
NEW Monkey Bar
Pasir Panjang, Pulau Perhentian Kecil (www.facebook.com/pages/MonkeyBar). One of the most popular bars on the island, Monkey Bar is not only a great place to chill out and make new friends (plenty of backpackers here) but it’s also the venue for regular themed parties and events. Keep an eye on the Facebook page to find out when it’s open for the season. Tip: it also offers cheap accommodation.
NEW Oh La La Pasir Panjang, Pulau Perhentian Kecil (www.ohlalaperhentian.com). Another hostel and bar combined, Oh La La is predictably popular with the backpackers. It’s an unpretentious bar situated on Pasir Panjang (Long Beach), which is pretty much the only place on the island you’re going to find any nightlife.
NEW Bayu Bar The Taaras Resort, Pulau Redang (09 630 8888/www.thetaaras.com). This chic open-air beach bar is an absolute delight with a decent cocktail list and light snacks such as pizza, tapas, and meze. Enjoy them all as you take in the superb Pulau Redang views.
Credit cards accepted. Daily, 6.30pm– 12midnight.
NEW Tupai Beach Bar
Laguna Redang Resort, Pulau Redang (09 631 0888/www.lagunaredang. com.my). Enjoy a more relaxed vibe at Tupai Beach Bar, part of the luxurious Laguna Redang Island Resort. Kick back on the beach with some cocktails and while away the hours. Don’t pin high hopes on the resident band though.
