CANTALOUPE

Time Out Malaysia Eating and Drinking Guide - - KL & SURROUNDS -

At Cantaloupe it always seems like everyone knows your name. The nine metre high concrete walls and the billowing sails that subdivide the room might feel cold elsewhere but, in this Contemporary Fine Dining restaurant, you feel as chilled out as in your best friend’s trendy loft. The light from the Twin Towers and KLCC Park streams in through Cantaloupe’s floor to ceiling windows, soft ombré carpets give muted colour, the massive yet somehow discreet orchid arrangement softens the night and hints of red glass on black marble breathe warmth into the room. Cantaloupe’s restrained and elegant design provides a striking setting in which to enjoy Chef Chris Bauer’s creative take on French cuisine. When it comes to the menu, the only constants here are change and technical prowess. Bauer is never content to rest on his laurels. We could pick out individual dishes but our advice is to splurge on a seasonal or degustation set menu to experience the full range of this talented chef. Furthermore, this is not the place to skip dessert: expect to be surprised. Pair your feast with a bottle of wine from Cantaloupe’s carefully-curated list of almost exclusively French vintages. If time is not on your side, the Express Gourmet lunch (served between 12noon and 2pm) may be the answer. For RM120++, you can enjoy eight superb courses within 45 minutes. But honestly, we’d rather clear our schedules and settle in for the afternoon, spoiled by good food, wine, and chat from this friendly duo. Troika Sky Dining, Level 23A, Tower B, The Troika, 19 Persiaran KLCC, KL (03 2162 0886/www.troikaskydining.com).
