At Can­taloupe it al­ways seems like ev­ery­one knows your name. The nine me­tre high con­crete walls and the bil­low­ing sails that sub­di­vide the room might feel cold else­where but, in this Con­tem­po­rary Fine Din­ing restau­rant, you feel as chilled out as in your best friend’s trendy loft. The light from the Twin Tow­ers and KLCC Park streams in through Can­taloupe’s floor to ceil­ing win­dows, soft om­bré car­pets give muted colour, the mas­sive yet some­how dis­creet orchid ar­range­ment soft­ens the night and hints of red glass on black mar­ble breathe warmth into the room. Can­taloupe’s re­strained and el­e­gant de­sign pro­vides a strik­ing set­ting in which to en­joy Chef Chris Bauer’s cre­ative take on French cui­sine. When it comes to the menu, the only con­stants here are change and tech­ni­cal prow­ess. Bauer is never con­tent to rest on his lau­rels. We could pick out in­di­vid­ual dishes but our ad­vice is to splurge on a sea­sonal or de­gus­ta­tion set menu to ex­pe­ri­ence the full range of this tal­ented chef. Fur­ther­more, this is not the place to skip dessert: ex­pect to be sur­prised. Pair your feast with a bot­tle of wine from Can­taloupe’s care­fully-cu­rated list of almost ex­clu­sively French vin­tages. If time is not on your side, the Ex­press Gourmet lunch (served be­tween 12noon and 2pm) may be the an­swer. For RM120++, you can en­joy eight su­perb cour­ses within 45 min­utes. But hon­estly, we’d rather clear our sched­ules and set­tle in for the af­ter­noon, spoiled by good food, wine, and chat from this friendly duo.
