SAMBAL CHILLI

Time Out Malaysia Eating and Drinking Guide - - EATING -

Nyonya cuisine is a unique gastronomic realm of its own; the smooth blend of pungent roots coupled with the pounding of fresh herbs and the long hours of marination prove that it takes a chef with the skills of a warrior to cook up the most tantalising Nyonya dish. Sambal Chilli is the newest member of Atria’s squad of restaurants and it looks like they’re here to stay, thanks to their eclectically seasoned Nyonya dishes that bring back the nostalgic feel of childhood favourites. The interior emanates a cheerful vibe with a lighthearted décor that crafts the simple feeling of being comfortably at home which is a great break away from the overrated industrial chic look that most eateries have been adopting. Traditional favourites like chicken kapitan curry are a must try: the hours of preparation and overnight marination bring out the blend of spices that have soaked deep into the meat, which tenderly falls off the bone when poked with a fork. Another one that shouldn’t be missed is the Inchi Kabin, a Nyonya classic. The juicy and fresh fried chicken with a crispy skin boasts an ethereal taste, thanks to the harmonious blend of lemongrass, coriander, cumin, ginger and black pepper that coats the skin and brings a burst of flavour. Complete the experience with banana fritters: they’re fried upon order and served with vanilla ice-cream or dipped in kicap chilli for an added zing. There you have it, the wholesome Nyonya culinary experience! T07, Third Floor @ Atria Mall, Petaling Jaya, Malaysia (03-7731 9869)
