com dec­o­rat­ing and in­te­rior de­sign. The lat­ter re­quires the de­signer to be in­volved in all as­pects of the pro­ject, from the draw­ing board and soft fur­nish­ings to tech­ni­cal so­lu­tions and fur­ni­ture place­ment.

So­phie was a public artist with a com­pany in Lon­don that cre­ated art in­stal­la­tions and mu­rals for the ben­e­fit of the com­mu­nity. One of her most in­ter­est­ing projects was one which im­ple­mented climb­ing walls in state schools us­ing the stu­dents’ art­work as the back­drop. This led her to set de­sign, skills which she put to good use when she came to Malaysia and was in­volved in the de­sign of all her chil­dren’s school pro­duc­tions. She also ran work­shops for chil­dren teach­ing paint­ing and sculp­ture. All these ac­tiv­i­ties led to So­phie turn­ing her at­ten­tion to in­te­rior de­sign. She de­cided to open her own com­pany af­ter dab­bling in the busi­ness and mak­ing all the nec­es­sary con­tacts to jus­tify do­ing it as a proper busi­ness.

The norm for in­te­ri­ors tends to be safe and min­i­mal­is­tic, but So­phie’s trade­mark use of vi­brant colours is what sets her apart. She be­lieves in ‘up­cy­cling’ (re­fur­bish­ing to make some­thing new) fur­ni­ture, us­ing light­ing to en­hance a space, and bring­ing out­door liv­ing in­side, tak­ing ad­van­tage of trop­i­cal liv­ing. Be­ing a one-woman show has its ob­vi­ous dis­ad­van­tages, but it also means that she is ut­terly in­volved

back burner. When the chil­dren started school, she re­alised that she wanted to do some­thing for her­self that didn’t in­volve play­dates, home­work and the chil­dren’s rou­tines. She started look­ing around for some­thing that would al­low her to work around her fam­ily’s sched­ule and if it was a prod­uct she per­son­ally loved, even bet­ter.
