What to do before giving up breastfeeding
Before you throw in the towel for good – and if they’re honest, most breastfeeding mums are tempted somewhere in the first six months to do so – here’s what you’re advised to do.
Hor advises, ‘the mum needs to go to a lactation counsellor. Most hospitals have them, and they can help and support the mother. If a mother is on the edge, “Do I give up or not give up?”, they feel guilty about it. They need to go for support, and that person should be full of empathy. A mum’s entire household may be stressed out and crying. Or if the mum is experiencing injured or bleeding nipples, she may think, “Why bother?” But even if a mum is determined to do it, she should go for help.’
Ultimately, asserts Hor, ‘it’s a personal choice. But it’s a choice that should be made on accurate information. Parents have to make informed choices.’
