The Shire Cafe
9-1 Jalan Radin Bagus 6, Bandar Baru Seri Petaling, PJ (019 650 2678/Facebook: Theshirecafe). In all honesty, we didn’t expect to like The Shire Café, what with the rising number of tacky themed cafés in town, but we were mighty pleased to have our minds changed. Inspired by ‘The Lord of The Rings’, this cosy café modeled after The Shire, a fictional region of JRR Tolkien’s Middle-earth, is all about warm lighting, wooden furniture and leather-bound books. A lifelike mural providing a threedimensional peek inside a hobbit’s home seems to be the main draw for Instagram users.
The extensive menu also takes a leaf out of the fantasy trilogy with sweet and savoury waffles and pancakes named after inhabitants and elements of Tolkien’s realm. A must-order is the Lembas bread, which Tolkien describes in ‘The Fellowship of the Ring’: ‘Eat little at a time, and only at need. For these things are given to serve you when all else fails. The cakes will keep sweet for many many days, if they are unbroken and left in their leaf-wrappings, as we have brought them’. While we cannot attest to the shelf-life of The Shire Café’s take on Lembas, we scrabbled for every last crumb of the sweet pastry showered with powdered sugar and wrapped in pandan leaves. Mon & Wed-Sun, 11am-12midnight. Pork-free. Child-friendly. High chairs available.
