Healthy food used to be so uninspiring, which is why the recent surge of diet-conscious eateries subtly invading KL’s dining scene is so welcome. Real Food originated in Singapore and has now expanded to Penang and KL. This is much more than just a café with a lovely dining space and kids’ play area; it’s also well stocked with organic and sustainable products from pasta and potato chips to natural skincare on their retail shelf.
The menu here is varied – salads, all-day breakfasts, sandwiches, burgers, pastas, rice dishes and desserts. Real Food specialises in vegan and vegetarian food, with a focus on special diets (gluten-free, Ayurvedic, diets that exclude onion and garlic, etc), and is ideal for children who are lactose intolerant or allergic to nuts, soy or wheat. We were pleased with the deep-fried Portobello mushroom burger that came with a side of organic potato salad and an assortment of fresh leaves and sprouts, and enjoyed the natural taste of the mushroom in between layers of vegan mayo, lettuce and a wholegrain bun. Bring the kids here if you’re looking to introduce them to vegetarian food that will actually make them want to eat!
