Perched 300m atop the hills of Kuala Kubu Bharu, The Sticks is tropical glamping at its finest. Featuring the lavish Opera House that can easily fit a family of six, a Bamboo House and tendok (a cross between a tent and a hut) accommodation, this green haven is approximately 1.5 hours drive from Kuala Lumpur. As electricity is mainly generated by solar power and generator, there’s no air conditioning and energy hungry appliances to speak of – except the water heater which runs on gas. There are options of either full-board or half-board, and all meals are home cooked with a choice of barbecue or steamboat (hot pot) for dinner. A stay here is incredibly relaxing thanks to its cool temperatures (it can get pretty chilly at night) and serene atmosphere. Located at the bend of the Sangloi River, daily activities focus on the outdoors with jungle trekking, whitewater rafting, paragliding (available from April to September) and educational walks for the kids. The Sticks, Lot 213 Jalan KKBFraser’s Hill, Kuala Kubu Baru, Selangor (thesticks.my). From RM140 per night.
