Hang out around Central Market
After your heritage walk, Central Market (Pasar Seni) (centralmarket.com.my) should be your next stop. Formerly the city’s main wet market, this Art Deco building was reinvented as a centre for local handicrafts, antiques and art. It’s a warren of little stores where you can pick up anything from traditional batik and woven baskets to antique ceramics and souvenirs. Plus, there’s a host of hip cafés in the area boasting shabby chic or industrial interiors. Head to Merchant’s Lane (fb.com/merchantslane) for localised café cuisine, and Chocha Foodstore (fb.com/chocha.foodstore) for innovative fusion dishes; it’s also one of the most Instagrammable places in the city. It’s interesting to note that this area used to be a notorious red light area.
