This prestigious public art gallery opened in 2015 and has shown major exhibitions to critical acclaim. Located in the centre of Kuala Lumpur in the contemporary ILHAM Towers, the gallery is committed to supporting and developing Malaysian modern and contemporary art within a regional and global context.
One of the gallery’s main aims is to appeal to a wide and diverse audience and not just serve as a showcase, but to also educate by offering a range of varied public programmes, talks, forums, cross-cultural events and exciting workshops.
Kuala Lumpur is fast becoming a leading Asian city with a burgeoning arts scene, and ILHAM has been at the forefront. Since opening, ILHAM has become renowned for their exhibitions, which have been described as having been excellently curated – something quite new in Malaysia. Previous exhibitions like ‘Era Mahathir’, ‘Picturing the Nation’ and ‘Afterwork’ have dealt with issues like race, history, politics and immigrant workers – which are all very current topics.
What really sets ILHAM apart are their family, school and children’s activities. The innovative ILHAM Kids! programme is both fun and educational with picture book reading sessions and fantastic art discovery tours led by enthusiastic and knowledgeable facilitators. There are tours for children aged 3-5, 6-8 and 9-12 years old and they are highly popular, so make sure you book your spot in advance.
If you’re looking for a unique gift, the gallery shop carries a wonderful selection of craft, art prints, books, bags and their own line of postcards, notebooks and posters. The gift shop is actually an extension of ILHAM Gallery’s objectives in promoting Malaysian arts and crafts which have been created by local designers and artisans.
Art is for everyone and should be made accessible to every strata of society. Admission to the ILHAM Gallery is free and will be an afternoon extremely well spent. ILHAM Level 3 & 5, ILHAM Tower, 8 Jalan Binjai, KL (ilhamgallery.com).
