Container Hotel

Scandinavian design meets Japanese aesthetics at Penang’s first capsule hotel. With branches in Kuala Lumpur and Ipoh, Container Hotel is fast becoming popular among backpackers with an eye for the unique.

After checking in at reception, guests are led to mixed or female-only dorms, where they can cosy up in pods fashioned from recycled shipping containers. Each pod is equipped with a foldable table stand, a reading light, and is well ventilated. There are even twin pods for travelling duos and love birds.

If you need more room to stretch out, hang out in the modern common area that looks like something straight out of an interior design magazine. The avantgarde entertainment centre is so neat that it steals the television’s thunder.

If you prize your privacy above novelty, stay in one of Container Hotel’s regular rooms instead. The White Room is furnished with a queen-sized bed while the White Suite comes with two – perfect for a small group of friends.

4 Gat Lebuh Chulia, George Town (+604 251 9515/containerhotel.my/penang). Mixed or female-only pods, RM60; White Room, RM180; White Suite, RM300.
