Design-wise, Chulia Court is hard to place, but its eclectic décor is pretty spectacular. If a Peranakan family left their magnificent shoplot to a stylish benefactor,
Chulia Court would be the result. One sweeping look at the hotel’s courtyard reveals Chinese brocade next to beaded curtains, teak antiques in contrast to modern bar stools, and ornate mirrors reflecting the warm glow of red paper lanterns.
A long bar is the nucleus of all the activity on the ground floor, and doubles as the check-in point for hotel guests. Hidden behind heavy drapes, a short flight of stairs leads to the top floor where the lodgings can be found. Unlike the gaudy entrance
and courtyard, Chulia Court’s rooms are more basic, but still squeaky clean and supremely comfortable. The carpeted dorm furnished with 20 bunk beds is practically new, and provides many a weary backpacker with respite from their travels.
All stays are inclusive of hot cooked breakfasts and a welcome drink from the bar. 357 Lebuh Chulia, George Town (+604 261 3809/ chuliacourt.com.my). Hostel bed, RM40; Standard single, RM140; Superior double, RM240; Family room, RM390.
