Penaga Hotel

Time Out Penang Visitors Guide - - Stay -

The Penaga Hotel is unique in the heritage zone as it’s a bigger property than most of the boutique hotels found in the area. It’s renowned for its art collection due to the residency the owners offer to selected artists from around the world. Although its location is quieter than most, being walking distance to great local food and heritage areas is always bonus. The owners are an architect and an environmentalist with a shared passion for art, and their expertise and love for design and décor show in every aspect of the hotel.

The hotel has been converted from 15 pre-war terrace houses and shophouses into 45 rooms and suites of varying sizes, best described as Straits Eclectic with a touch of Art Deco. Each room category has been distinctively decorated with mostly Chinese pieces, and topped up with a bright colour palette to go with the sometimes very contemporary art pieces present. There is a small pool (a rarity in most heritage hotels in the city), a lovely spa offering treatments using indigenous ingredients, and a restaurant serving a good selection of local and Western dishes.

Corner of Jalan Hutton & Lebuh Clark, George Town (+604 261 1893/www. hotelpenaga.com). Depending on season, from RM400 for Deluxe Room; from RM900 for Clark Terrace (sleeps four people).
