If you are in a cold sweat about the thought of having to churn out essays and do research, don’t panic. “It’s not paperwork that matters but skills,” says Simon. “Suppose you take an online course in marketing and become a Google AdWords practitioner. Your boss will be delighted you have something extra to offer!” Take short courses, attend workshops and look for online courses, too. As long as it’s relevant to your work, your boss will love you for any extra effort you show. Make sure you report any new credentials during your annual evaluation! And when you write up your CV, mention one or two in your letter, and list the lot on the second page.
