CW and her husband had been trying to have a baby on and off for the past 10 years, but it took her longer to conceive than they had expected. She shares that having a baby was not important at first but over time, it took on a bigger significance.

So the couple did the next best thing, which was to keep themselves well informed and meeting medical professionals. “After casually trying for about five years, we decided to get serious and had medical checks done by one of the leading fertility doctors in PJ. Sperm count was great so doctor asked me to do a laparoscopy to rule out any cyst or other issues.”

The procedure seemed pretty invasive to CW that she decided not to do it for the time being. She then had a work opportunity overseas and soon migrated where her career took over and the couple forgot about having a baby until a few years later.

“During this time we went to another fertility specialist and embarked on a course of hormones and IUI, but still saw no positive results. When we returned to KL, we met another specialist who told us not to waste any more time – so we went for IVF. ”

The first attempt failed and CW was left traumatised. However, after taking a break, changing doctors and protocols, the couple tried again and was successful. “I was happy, so ecstatic when I found out that I was pregnant! We waited until after 12 weeks for a blood test to check for any abonormalities and also to determine the gender. Once we got the all-clear we shared the news.”

Does she think that no age is too old to have babies? “Yes and no. Though I had Isaac in my 40s, I was quite fit and in good shape, physically and emotionally. The sleepless nights, physical exertions of carrying a child and chasing him around can be taxing. Only do it if you have the physical and emotional fitness. Having financial flexibility helps too, so you can pay for help and kids’ stuff is super-expensive!”

CW had her son Isaac (now three years old) at age 45.
