What Is ECT?

Elec­tro­con­vul­sive ther­apy (ECT) is a treat­ment for severe de­pres­sion and other men­tal ill­nesses such as bipo­lar dis­or­der and psy­chosis.

When is it pre­scribed?

For some peo­ple, stan­dard treat­ment has lit­tle or no ef­fect, which can cause severe dis­tress. In th­ese cases, ECT can help – more than 80 per cent of de­pres­sion suf­fer­ers re­port an im­prove­ment.

How does it work?

An elec­tri­cal cur­rent is passed through the brain, af­fect­ing its elec­tri­cal ac­tiv­ity, which can lead to an im­prove­ment in symp­toms.
