What Is ECT?
Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a treatment for severe depression and other mental illnesses such as bipolar disorder and psychosis.
When is it prescribed?
For some people, standard treatment has little or no effect, which can cause severe distress. In these cases, ECT can help – more than 80 per cent of depression sufferers report an improvement.
How does it work?
An electrical current is passed through the brain, affecting its electrical activity, which can lead to an improvement in symptoms.
