Alternattiva Demokratika Żgħażagħ yesterday reiterated its longstanding call for the provision of universal suffrage for 16-year-olds. ADZ believes that 16-year-olds should not have to wait till 2024 in order to participate in General and European elections.

ADZ Chairperson James Gabaretta stated: “Young people are both the present and the future of our country. Young people will feel both the immediate and long-term effects of political decisions taken today. As such, they should have a say in those decisions through the democratic process.”

ADZ spokesperson Marc' Andrea Cassar further stated: “AD has called for voting rights to 16year-olds ever since the 2008 election. Our position remains the same today. If 16-year-olds can work and marry, they should have the right to vote. Others are now joining AD in calling for this development to enhance democratic participation.”
