Messias penalty enough for Naxxar

Malta Independent - - SPORT - Marsa: Naxxar: Referee:

Marsa Naxxar 0 1

A penalty scored at the start of the second period was enough for Naxxar to grab the three points at stake for their second victory of the season.

On their part the defeat is the third consecutive one for the Redblues who are still in search of the first goals and points of the season. Newly promoted Marsa are surely finding the going hard in this category and a rather difficult season is in the waiting.

However yesterday they should have easily grabbed at least a point from this match in which a draw would have been a fairer result.

After barely five minutes play Gilbert Martin, one of the best on the field of play, had a good effort from the edge of the area with the ball going inches wide.

Minutes later Naxxar lost Lee James Agius, with an ambulance only showing up after more than twenty minutes.

Marsa continued to dictate matters with Naxxar on the defnsive and on 24 minutes Luke Scorfna had a good run past two Naxxar defenders but his effort went wide.

Naxxar were more determined on the resumption but Marsa again had a very good opportunity on 51 minutes when De Melo’s close range header was brilliantly saved by Omar Borg.

On 54 minutes the decisive penalty in favour of the Lions, when Yessous camilleri floored Messias inside the penalty area and from the resultant penalty Messias made no mistake.

Marsa went close to a deserved equaliser on the hour when Gilbert Martin’s dipper was again brilliantly saved by Omar Borg.

Marsa continued to attack with Naxxar holding on desperately to their slender but precious lead. Deep in stoppage Naxxar should have wrapped up the match when Messias was all alone in front of goal, but missed a glorious chance hitting wide.
