Norbert Attard wins bronze at Europe Cup
Last week the European championships of darts took place in Egmond Aan Zee, Holland with 32 countries battling it out over four days of competition.
Team Malta managed to obtain the best ever result at these championships with solid performances in the team event, finishing overall in 10th place and a bronze medal for Norbert Attard in the men`s singles event which ended up being the talk of the tournament.
On day one, the four team event took place with the national team consisting of Norbert Attard, Albert Scerri, Gordon Stanmore and Vincent Busuttil topping their group on maximum points with wins against Luxembourg (9-6); Iceland (9-4) and Germany (9-4).
In the last 16 stage they lost (94) against one of the pre-tournament favourites, Scotland. This was the first time ever the Maltese team qualified from the group stages at either the European Championship or World Cup.
Day two saw the four Maltese players taking part in the Men`s singles competition with Norbert Attard claiming the first ever medal for Malta at these championships with outstanding performances which including a 4-3 win against the 2015 world champion, Scott Mitchell and a 4-1 win against the number 1 ranked WDF player, Darius Labanauskas of Lithuania.
Attard eventually lost at the semi-final stage to gold medal winner Richard Veenstra of Holland who also eliminated another Maltese player, Albert Scerri, at the last 32 stage in a match which was decided in the last leg. Busuttil and Stanmore saw early exits in the competition. At the end of day two, Malta was occupying 4th place in the overall standings.
Day three saw early exits for the Maltese pair`s team with Attard/Scerri losing (3-4) in the first round against Samouchos/Krontiris of Greece and Stanmore/Busutill (0-4) at the last 32 stage against O`Connor/Flood of Northern Ireland which made all the way to the semi-finals.
