Nor­bert At­tard wins bronze at Europe Cup

Last week the Euro­pean cham­pi­onships of darts took place in Eg­mond Aan Zee, Hol­land with 32 coun­tries bat­tling it out over four days of com­pe­ti­tion.

Team Malta man­aged to ob­tain the best ever re­sult at these cham­pi­onships with solid per­for­mances in the team event, fin­ish­ing over­all in 10th place and a bronze medal for Nor­bert At­tard in the men`s sin­gles event which ended up be­ing the talk of the tour­na­ment.

On day one, the four team event took place with the na­tional team con­sist­ing of Nor­bert At­tard, Al­bert Scerri, Gor­don Stan­more and Vin­cent Busut­til top­ping their group on max­i­mum points with wins against Lux­em­bourg (9-6); Ice­land (9-4) and Ger­many (9-4).

In the last 16 stage they lost (94) against one of the pre-tour­na­ment favourites, Scot­land. This was the first time ever the Mal­tese team qual­i­fied from the group stages at ei­ther the Euro­pean Cham­pi­onship or World Cup.

Day two saw the four Mal­tese play­ers tak­ing part in the Men`s sin­gles com­pe­ti­tion with Nor­bert At­tard claim­ing the first ever medal for Malta at these cham­pi­onships with out­stand­ing per­for­mances which in­clud­ing a 4-3 win against the 2015 world champion, Scott Mitchell and a 4-1 win against the num­ber 1 ranked WDF player, Dar­ius La­banauskas of Lithua­nia.

At­tard even­tu­ally lost at the semi-fi­nal stage to gold medal win­ner Richard Veen­stra of Hol­land who also elim­i­nated an­other Mal­tese player, Al­bert Scerri, at the last 32 stage in a match which was de­cided in the last leg. Busut­til and Stan­more saw early ex­its in the com­pe­ti­tion. At the end of day two, Malta was oc­cu­py­ing 4th place in the over­all stand­ings.

Day three saw early ex­its for the Mal­tese pair`s team with At­tard/Scerri los­ing (3-4) in the first round against Samou­chos/Kron­tiris of Greece and Stan­more/Busu­till (0-4) at the last 32 stage against O`Con­nor/Flood of North­ern Ireland which made all the way to the semi-fi­nals.

An­dre Zam­mit (pub­lic re­la­tions of­fi­cer) said: “On be­half of the Malta darts as­so­ci­a­tion, we would like to thank and con­grat­u­late the team for these pos­i­tive re­sults which will cer­tainly aid the sport in con­tin­u­ing the re-brand­ing project we are cur­rently un­der­go­ing”.
